The Beginning of Mikami Gardens

When I was abroad for 4 years in Israel, I lived on the top floor of a Bauhaus in Tel Aviv.  These buildings have flat roofs and they are commonly used as patios.  Some of them are used for solar water heaters, which saves money on the heating of water.  Most of the rooftops are left open without any use.  I decided to use mine for my garden.

With the use of planter boxes, soil, trellises, water and constant sun, I fed myself with homegrown tomatoes, cucumbers, basil, parsley and bell peppers.  I also grew flowers.  My empty rooftop eventually turned into an immense garden with couches, coffee tables and a BBQ.  I hosted get-togethers with friends, enjoyed the diversity of plants, inspired the community and relished the view from my productive Israeli rooftop.

I wondered why no one else had flourishing gardens on their patios as well.  So, I invited my neighbors and people from my building to come and start planting with me.  My community garden had just been started.  As the months passed, my neighbors and people from my building continued gardening and added their own plants.  I could see how important it was for people to grow their own plants.

Today, I continue my effort to connect people with their outdoor living spaces with ornamental and edible options.  Where there is a need for space, I design intelligent options to maximize use of the sun.  My success shines with every happy customer.

Home Garden

Our winter vegetables are growing very well.  Sugar snap peas are tasting incredible and they are growing on the side of my garage.  Our kale and chard are used regularly in our morning juice and dinner recipes.
